Logbook!

We now have a logbook!!!

Thanks to some Google research that eventually led me back to Google Maps, you can now (if everything works) "drop pins" on the map I created to show where you found a crane!

Try it out!

If You Found A Crane...

And if you haven't then don't worry!
You only have about 980 more opportunities : )

Nothing else to report, but here are the links about the MS Walk.

P.S. I LOVE the Google homepage today

Being A Lurker Day 1

So this morning I began placing cranes around campus (I was going to start yesterday but all I did was go to work and CVS...and you have no idea how uncomfortable it is to be hovering around shelves at CVS while nervously glancing around and reaching into your giant bag haha so needless to say I decided not to start there).

12 little orange cranes are somewhere around campus and hopefully people find the outdoor ones before it rains/is dewy/landscapers find them.

There are a couple in Webb, a parking meter, newspaper rack, and 1 on each floor of the Grad Tower of South Hall (a muggle came up behind me before I could take a pic on the 6th) and later I will leave a few by Embarcadero Hall.

Now some pics!
My first plant! (pun intended)
This may seem like a silly place but its along a busy walkway

Catching up on the Nexus
Didn't read the sign til after I placed it
sooo chances are slim that someone will find this

 Someone got a present!

Painting The Town Orange

For the past 4 years I have participated in the MS Walk either in San Luis Obispo or Santa Barbara. This year I'm trying to get as many people involved as possible and that is going to start with some orange cranes!
Some of our team members from last year

But first, here is some info from the website:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) interrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body and stops people from moving.

  • The National Multiple Sclerosis Society supports more MS research, offers more services for people with MS, provides more professional education programs and furthers more MS advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world.

I have two friends my age who have MS so the effects of this disease are becoming more apparent to me. Today, there is no cure for MS, and with a diagnosis occurring more frequently between the ages of 20 and 50, many individuals face a lifetime filled with unpredictability.

Now back to those orange cranes:

Since cranes also promote healing and this week happens to be MS Awareness Week, I am only going to be placing orange cranes.  I will still write a link to this blog on the back of each one and hope that people will see this blog post and follow the links I'm about to post.

This event is something that is really special to me so if you would like to donate then follow the links below.

Thanks! And don't forget to keep on movin!

We even made it into the brochure 2 years ago!

Why I'm Doing This

I honestly have no idea why I decided to fold 1,000 cranes but I did and now, 450 cranes later, I just recently started wondering what the HECK I'm going to do with all of them...

The kit that I bought includes string to basically create a GIGANTIC mobile that is supposedly over 3 feet long. Problem is I would have no where to put that...so then I thought that it would be better if I just tried to spread some love/peace/etc by giving them away!

This is my plan:
-write what number each crane is under the wings
-write the link to this blog
-leave the cranes around campus, IV, Goleta, and SB
-pray that it doesn't rain
-hope that people get just a little joy out of finding a crane
-hope that this is not considered littering...

I will start placing cranes tomorrow so keep your eyes peeled!

The Legend of 1,000 Paper Cranes

According to incredibly reliable sources like Wikipedia and the back of my “Make 1,000 Cranes Kit,” the crane is an ancient symbol that represents peace.  There’s a book called Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes that tells the story of a girl who lived in Hiroshima during WWII and the dropping of the Atomic Bomb.  She developed leukemia from the radiation and decided to fold 1,000 paper cranes because doing so, according to legend, grants the creator a wish.  In a somewhat depressing twist she died before she was able to complete 1,000 cranes but her family and friends finished making the cranes in her memory.
Now, cranes are oftentimes given as a wedding, anniversary, or new baby gift and are still believed to be a sign of good luck for the person who folds the cranes.
